Cross-time Dialogue

Tianning Temple Extension Design
Individual Work

Site: Beijing, China
Date: Summer 2015

This Project is a temple extension work of Tianning Temple in Beijing. Tianning Temple is one of the oldest temples in Beijing with precious historic value. However, a portion of the temple has been destroyed in a couple of past events causing the current parts incomplete. The missing functions include sutra collection rooms, lecture rooms and a main hall. Therefore, in order to complete the historical functions as much as possible without disturbing the current structures, an extension has been designed. The combinations of missing programs into the proposed structure could create a new flow of circulation for an intriguing spatial experience. Additionally, a new program of teahouse has been added into this ancient temple, which also enriches the entire experience and creates a dialogue between old and new.
